“Glory in Remembrance: A Photo Exhibition Marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the 26th Anniversary of Macao’s Return to the Motherland” Opens at Macau Millennium College

On the afternoon of 21 December 2025, the photo exhibition “Glory in Remembrance: A Photo Exhibition Marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the 26th Anniversary of Macao’s Return to the Motherland” opened at the Taipa campus of Macau Millennium College (“MMC” or the “College”). The exhibition offers the community in Macao a visual chronicle of the Chinese nation’s collective memory spanning generations.

Officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Wan Sucheng, Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Cheang Kai Ming, Acting President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government; Gao Yuan, Director of the Department of Information and Public Diplomacy of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Macao; Chen Lujun, President of China News Service; Lok Po, Director of the Macao Daily News and President of the Macau Internet Audiovisual Association; Lao Nga Wong, a Member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the CPPCC and Chairman of the Association of Returned Overseas Chinese Macau; Wu Zhiliang, Vice-Chair of the CPPCC Committee on Culture, History and Learning and Chairman of the Executive Board of the Macao Foundation; Louie Wong Lok I, Acting Director of the Macau Government Information Bureau; Chan Iok Wai, Head of the Department of Students of the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao SAR Government; Fan Yaosheng, General Manager of Bank of China Macao Branch; and Zhong Weihe, MMC Rector. Around 200 representatives from across the community also attended, including members of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR such as José Pereira Coutinho, Chan Lai Kei and Kou Kam Fai.

Professor Zhong Weihe said in his remarks that MMC has consistently regarded patriotism education as an important part of its mission to foster virtue and cultivate talent. Hosting a themed photo exhibition at MMC’s new campus, he noted, reflects the College’s original aspiration to develop the campus into an open and shared cultural space for the wider community. He expressed the hope that young people in Macao would, through the photographs, come to better understand the path the country and nation have travelled, and grow into pillars who serve Macao, contribute to national development and engage with the world.

In his remarks, Wu Zhiliang said that during the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the people of Macao stood together with the people across the country through storm and stress, sharing weal and woe, and made unique contributions to victory in a variety of ways. He expressed the hope that all sectors of society would continue to tell the story of Macao’s wartime history, so as to illuminate the road ahead for human civilisation.

Cheang Kai Ming said in his speech that the exhibition is not only a tribute to and remembrance of the martyrs, but also a vivid educational resource for patriotism education. It enables Macao residents, especially young people, to gain a direct sense of the humiliation of national weakness and aggression, and to better appreciate the hard-won value of the country’s strength and prosperity today.

The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 26th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland. Featuring around 150 precious historical photographs, the exhibition is organised into four sections. The first, “A Nation at War”, presents rare images of courageous fighting by forces led by the Communist Party of China, including the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army, the Eighth Route Army, the New Fourth Army and the South China People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla forces. The second, “Supporting the War Effort”, captures moving scenes of Chinese people at home and abroad stepping forward without hesitation to support the resistance. The third, “The Glory of Victory”, focuses on the historic moment of national rebirth through fire and hardship. The fourth, “Macao in Memory”, looks back on Macao’s contribution during the war and showcases the city’s achievements since its return to the motherland. The exhibition will run until 23 January 2026.

The exhibition is thematically guided by the Macao Branch of China News Service and jointly organised by the Macao Foundation, MMC and the Macau Internet Audiovisual Association, with the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders serving as a partner organisation. The Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao SAR Government provides support, while the Oral History Association of Macao offers academic support.
