The Library of Macau Millennium College was planned in 2001 and officially launched in September 2002. It comprises two library sites, located at the Taipa Campus and the Civil Plaza Campus, and is equipped with book stack areas, reading spaces and smart library facilities to support the teaching and research needs of faculty members and students across the College.
In recent years, in alignment with the College’s “Digital and Intelligent +” development strategy, the Library has advanced a comprehensive smart transformation. It has developed a smart library system centred on four key components: a cross-border virtual–physical connected library, digital avatar, smart bookshelves and a smart learning hub. This system breaks the constraints of time and space and enhances the effectiveness of academic and teaching services.
The Library has worked with Guangdong University of Science & Technology in Guangdong Province to develop a 1:1 virtual 3D library, connecting library collections and electronic resources across the Greater Bay Area. Its total collection now exceeds five million items, covering printed and electronic books, theses and dissertations, journals and multimedia resources. It is also connected to major academic databases such as Bailian, Duxiu and CNKI, enabling faculty members and students to access a vast body of literature without leaving campus. Digital avatar is used in scenarios such as resource retrieval, reading enquiries and virtual guided tours, creating a round-the-clock smart service experience.
In terms of physical spaces, Macau Millennium College’s smart bookshelves incorporate the College’s independently developed patented technology, namely the “two-sided borrowing and return system”. Physical bookshelves built on this system separate users from robots, thereby enabling unmanned, secure and precise borrowing and return of books. The smart learning pod accommodates groups of up to four people and combines sound insulation, privacy and AI-enabled functions. It supports a wide range of uses, from language practice and mock interviews to psychological relaxation.
Looking ahead, the Library will continue to deepen interlibrary cooperation and smart development, promote the application of VR and AI technologies, and gradually open its services to the wider community. It is committed to building a high-quality academic research and shared learning platform for the Greater Bay Area.
